An Appeal

LITERARY AND COMPETITION AWARENESS ASSOCIATION

H.O : Lilong, Manipur (ESTD, 1995)

An Appeal

1. In this age of computers while the whole world is networked, the most important resource is human resource. If we could have a power-house of super brains we can control the world. Americans are managing the best brains of the world thus controlling the world in every way. It is now question of survival, if you want to survive as a nation, you should have the best brains. It is the survival of the fittest as ever. The world is highly competitive. To survive you have to be the best.

2. Let us now ponder for a while. We have been living in Manipur since 617 AD of king Naophangba period. We are now approximately 8% of the total population of Manipur. If you see the total literacy rate of Manipur it is around 80% whereas we are at 55%. Again the percentage of graduates is 5%. This is for male but for female it is even less. We are pulling down the literacy rate of Manipur.

3. What the government has done about it. The government has established the MOBC ministry, given the necessary funding and number of schemes are being implemented. Recently it has recommended appointment of 5/5 teachers in selected Madrasas. But as usual, there is void in the implementation of these due to some circumstances. Again certain vested interests are misusing these schemes. We have a powerful tool in the form of RTI (Right to Information) etc. Let us wake up and start using these powerful weapons to unmask those satans amongst us.

4. What as a community, we are doing. There were numbers of pioneers in our community who really worked hard to change the educational status. The roles of Dr.Abdul Ali (1900-1956), Mr Muhammad Alimuddin-ex CM, Mr Abdul Qadir-ex MLA, Mr Fazlur Rahman (Fazu Master), Mr Syed Jalaluddin Amin, Mr MA Wahab, Mr Habibur Rahman, Mr Hesamuddin AE who are no more among us, will always be remembered by generations to come. There may be several others who are not mentioned here. The recent movement of establishing English medium schools is a step in the right directions. The school committees of each and every schools are all visionaries and worth mentioning. The roles of different clubs, and organizations, from time to time, give impetus to quality education movement in Lilong. With these efforts in Lilong where we used to ask how many have passed the examinations are asking how many are in I-Division. There are several students qualifying in the entrance test of professional courses. Even the student who topped in MBBS entrance examination is now from Lilong, that too, a girl. A remarkable achievement indeed.

5. But is this the standard that is required for survival in this age? Not definitely not. We need to do more. How many of these students who passed in I Division in High School Leaving Examination actually qualify in All India Level Competitions like IAS, IFS, Bank PO, SSC, CPO and other competitions and actually become the pillar of our society we dream of. Unfortunately, it is quite few. What is wrong then? Where is the void? Certain areas that could be the reasons for this state of affairs are:

a) Lack of proper guidance after XII.

b) Lack of morale

c) Lack of proper personality Development in schools.

d) Weakness in English speaking and writing

e) Economic Backwardness

f) Lack of sense of Responsibility.

6. What are the remedial measures? Literary and Competitive Awareness association suggests the following steps. You are requested to choose the suitable options.

A) Personality Development Period. A period twice a week be added in school lessons plan covering the following activities-

i) Group Discussion.

ii) Lecturate/Symposium.

iii) Ex-Tempore Speech.

iv) Debating.

v) Mock Interview.

vi) Creative Activities.

B) English Speaking. The following items should be covered.

i) Conversation.

ii) Dramatics.

iii) Mini Parliament.

iv) Court Proceedings.

C) English Writing.

i) Letter Writing.

ii) Article Writing.

iii) Reporting.

7. Choosing the right career is important aspect we generally neglect. Not every student can become a Doctor or an Engineer. There are thousands of other professions/options available to a student as enclosed here. Schools are suggested to maintain a dossier of each and every student to find out their inclination. This will help identify his/her area of interest. The same can be discussed with the respective parents in Teachers-Parents meet. At the end of schooling, the suitable Profession for the students can be identified.

8. Another area that needs special attention is the role of parents in a child’s education. 50% of the parents here are either not aware or not interested in taking this responsibility. Without a pro-active role of the parents, a child can never succeed. The morale and values are all taught and inculcated at home. Regular interaction between the teacher and parents is very important. There are various avenues for parents to obtain information for the future of their children.

9. The education of girl child is also a neglected area. A very shocking culture of sending young girls to vegetables market for selling vegetables is prevalent. We should immediately stop this trend of activity. It is also an offense under the child labour act. Instead of sending the girl, any other male member or the father can do the work.

10. Lastly, the case of drug peddling and drug abuse is shockingly a common place in Lilong that needs to be effectively curved once for all. Many boys and adults are taking or misusing drugs for any silly reason which is not the solution. The prevailing environment in Manipur is also contributing to this menace of rampant drug abuse. The origin of drugs and network of drug distribution should be identified and tackled effectively before it is too late.
